ARDBEG - Arrrrrrrdbeg - Committee Release - 51.8%
Ardbeg is an iconic distillery located on the mythical island of Islay, in the heart of the traditional whisky region of Scotland. Renowned for producing some of the most peated whiskies in the world, Ardbeg stands as an essential reference for lovers of powerful and authentic Single Malts. Innovative and bold, this distillery made history by becoming the first whisky to travel into space: part of its production was sent to the International Space Station in 2011 to study the effects of weightlessness on aging, a unique experiment in the world of spirits.
Whisky production on this historic site dates back to 1798, with commercial sales starting as early as 1815, the same year as its illustrious neighbor Laphroaig. Ardbeg quickly achieved tremendous success, notably for its use in prestigious blends. However, from 1838, the distillery went through a long period of difficulties, with several ownership changes and successive bankruptcies, before a definitive closure in 1981. Reopened in 1989 but with production limited to two months per year, Ardbeg finally resumed full activity in 1997 following its acquisition by Glenmorangie. Today, the distillery belongs to the prestigious French luxury group LVMH, integrated within the Glenmorangie group, ensuring both quality and international renown.
The two traditional pot stills at Ardbeg annually produce one million liters of pure alcohol, exclusively dedicated to the production of exceptional Single Malt. This whisky is mainly matured in Bourbon casks, but also undergoes a delicate finishing in Sherry casks, adding richness and complexity. Known for its heavily peated profile, Ardbeg is distinguished by a less maritime character than other Islay whiskies, favoring intense notes of smoke, spices, and a subtle sweetness that captivates the most discerning connoisseurs.
This special and limited edition celebrates the remarkable career of Mickey Heads, a dedicated manager of the distillery for 13 years. For the first time in Ardbeg's history, this whisky is entirely finished in ex-Rye casks, offering a new innovative and rare aromatic dimension, synonymous with a unique and precious tasting experience.
