TOBERMORY - Gin - 46.3%
The Tobermory Distillery is located on the Isle of Mull, situated off the picturesque west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1798, it remains the only whisky distillery on the Isle of Mull as well as one of the oldest historic commercial distilleries in all of Scotland. In 1797, John Sinclair, a kelp merchant, applied for a lease of 57 acres in the area known as Ledaig to build housing and a distillery. His request was denied; only permission to build a brewery was granted. Determined, he stayed true to his original plan and a year later established the Ledaig distillery. During the 1930s, the Great Depression coupled with a decade of Prohibition in the United States caused a drastic drop in whisky demand, forcing production to halt for 41 long years. It was only in 1993, after its acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers, that the distillery came back to life. Since 2013, it has been owned by the Distell group.
The distillery produces the renowned Tobermory Gin as well as two distinct Single Malts: a non-peated Tobermory and an intensely peated Ledaig. Both whiskies are made using the same traditional pot stills, the same washbacks (fermentation vessels), mash tuns (mashing vessels), and the same pure local water, but differ radically due to the unique character of the malted barley used.
Tobermory Gin is made from a neutral grain spirit as well as a distillate from the pot stills dedicated to Tobermory whisky, carefully distilled to achieve optimal purity and freshness. All botanicals are infused for a minimum of 24 hours in this base distillate to preserve their delicate aromas. The recipe includes carefully selected botanicals such as wild juniper, fragrant heather, traditional tea, elegant elderflower, and fresh orange peel. This exceptional gin won the prestigious title of "Best Scottish Classic Gin" at the World Gin Awards 2020, just six months after its market launch. Its iconic bottle depicts the charming village of Tobermory with its colorful houses, an authentic symbol of this unique region.
