Nikka Whisky Distilling Company is an iconic brand established in Japan, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, recognized as the true pioneer and father of Japanese whisky. The son of a sake brewer, Masataka Taketsuru deepened his knowledge in chemistry at university before perfecting his craft in several prestigious Scottish distilleries. In 1920, he returned to Japan accompanied by his Scottish wife, Rita, and contributed to the birth of the first Japanese whisky by working for the company that would later become Suntory. Driven by his passion, he then founded his own distillery, Yoichi, giving rise to the parent company Nikka, now famous worldwide.
Besides whisky production, Nikka also owns distilleries specialized in the manufacture of Shochu, a unique Japanese spirit distilled from noble ingredients such as rice, barley, and sweet potato. The company also has facilities dedicated to the production of cider brandy and apple wine. In 2001, Nikka was integrated into the Japanese group Asahi Breweries, strengthening its position in the global premium spirits market.
The Miyagikyo distillery, built in 1969, is Nikka's second distillery, created to produce a whisky with characteristics distinct from those of Yoichi. Nestled in a misty valley surrounded by mountains at the confluence of two crystal-clear rivers, this exceptional location is the key to its success. After tasting the pure water of the Nikkawa river, the main source for the distillery, Masataka Taketsuru was immediately captivated and decided to build the distillery at this precise location. This strategic choice contributes to Miyagikyo's unique identity.
Miyagikyo Single Malt is renowned for its soft and fruity profile, offering an elegant and refined tasting experience. This single malt stands out due to a moderate use of peated malt, significantly less than Yoichi, and distillation carried out in a steam-heated indirect-fired still at low temperature, ensuring exceptional aromatic finesse.
