TOMATIN - Vintage 2009 - Ex cask Recharred Verdejo - 51%
The Tomatin Distillery is one of the largest and most prestigious distilleries in Scotland, located in the heart of the Highlands, not far from Inverness. Its name, Tomatin, means "juniper hill" in Gaelic, referring to the juniper wood which, when burned, produces no smoke. This wood was long used by illicit distillers during Prohibition to keep their operations secret. Situated over 300 meters above sea level in the Monadhliath mountains, this isolated location is explained by the site's history, which once hosted a still where cattle breeders came to fill their flasks. Officially founded in 1897 during the whisky boom, Tomatin benefited from a strategic location near a railway line connecting the distillery to the bustling market of Inverness as well as a source of fresh mountain water, an essential condition for the quality of its whisky. Despite this, the distillery went through difficult periods, including bankruptcy in 1906, reopening in 1909 under new management, then difficulties during the economic crisis of the 1980s which led to its liquidation and partial dismantling of its stills. In 1988, it was bought by Takara Shuzo Ltd and the distribution company Okura, both Japanese. Since then, Tomatin has experienced significant development, prioritizing quality over quantity and enriching its range of exceptional Single Malts.
This Tomatin 2009 is an exclusive limited edition, specially crafted to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Maison Dugas. This rare whisky has been carefully aged in recharred Spanish Verdejo casks, imparting unique and refined notes. Its high alcohol content of 51% reveals a remarkable aromatic power.
