KOPKE - Porto - Tawny - 50 years - 20%
Kopke is the oldest Port House, founded in 1638 in Portugal, and globally recognized for its exceptional expertise in crafting outstanding Port wines. Founded by Nicolau Köpke, consul general of the Hanseatic League, the Kopke House established itself from the start as a benchmark among premium Portuguese wine producers. Two years after settling in Portugal from Hamburg, Kopke was already exporting its first bottles to Northern Europe. In 1781, the acquisition of a vineyard in the famous Douro Valley marked the beginning of an iconic winemaking adventure, combining tradition and innovation in the service of prestige Ports.
The 50-year-old Tawny Port is the result of a remarkable blend of traditional Douro grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, and Tinta Roriz. The grapes, hand-selected for optimal quality, are destemmed and then gently crushed. Fermentation in traditional lagares allows maximum extraction of aromas and color, until the ideal sweetness is achieved. Each wine in the blend is aged in oak barrels for varying lengths of time, with the average age of the whole defining the 50-year mention displayed on the label. The careful addition of grape brandy seals the production of this exceptional fortified wine, a reflection of Portuguese oenological heritage.
