GRAHAM'S PORTO - Single Harvest Tawny Port 1940
Graham's is a prestigious producer of Port from the wonderful Douro valley, located in northern Portugal. Founded in the early 19th century as a textile company by the famous William and John Graham brothers in Glasgow, the Graham's house began its wine adventure when they received a barrel of Port as settlement of a debt. Since then, the company has continued to prosper. Today, Graham's belongs to the Symington family, renowned for their expertise and owners of several iconic estates such as Dow's and Warre's. This emblematic house was also the preferred choice of historical personalities, notably Sir Winston Churchill, who appreciated this exceptional Port when he was not enjoying his other favorite: Pol Roger. Graham's 1940 was even served aboard the legendary RMS Queen Mary ocean liner, highlighting its international reputation and timeless prestige.
Vintage Ports from 1940 are extremely rare and precious. During World War II, most producers either stopped marketing their Ports or significantly reduced their production, making these wines all the more exceptional. Despite a smaller harvest that year, the selected grapes were of remarkably superior quality. This Single Harvest Tawny Port 1940 has patiently aged in oak barrels for nearly eighty years, allowing for extraordinary refinement. The result is a wine of remarkable finesse and perfect balance, reflecting not only the exceptional quality of the original grapes but also the expertise and know-how passed down through generations by the Symington family. Charles Symington, renowned master blender, carefully selected the two rare remaining barrels of this 1940 Tawny Port to bring this exceptional edition to life.
The grapes used for this masterpiece mainly came from the prestigious Quinta dos Malvedos owned by Graham’s, complemented by parcels from small vineyards nestled in the Rio Torto valley, which traditionally provide some of the best fruit needed for crafting exceptional Ports. The grape varieties carefully cultivated and used are: Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Amarela, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Sousão, iconic varieties that contribute to the complexity and unique aromatic richness of this Port.
