The Balblair Distillery is located in Edderton, in the picturesque Ross-shire region of Scotland, the birthplace of some of the world's finest single malt whiskies. Founded in 1790 by the visionary John Ross, the distillery thrived under his leadership before his son Andrew joined the family business in 1824, ensuring the continuity of a tradition of excellence. Remaining in the Ross family until 1894, Balblair was taken over by Alexander Cowan, who initiated its revival. In 1895, the distillery was completely rebuilt by the famous architect Charles C. Doig, which brought its facilities closer to the Edderton railway station, facilitating the transport of raw materials and finished products. However, the exceptional quality of the original water source was not compromised: the distillery proudly continues to use the pure water from the Ault Dearg stream, a key element that gives its whiskies their unique and authentic taste.
In 1948, the distillery was purchased by Robert Cumming, who undertook significant modernization and a substantial increase in production, thereby strengthening Balblair's reputation on the international market. After his retirement in 1970, the distillery came under the control of Hiram Walker, before being acquired in 1996 by the Inver House Distillers Limited group, which continues to uphold the tradition with passion and rigor. Formerly renowned for marketing its whiskies by vintage, the Balblair brand has offered since April 2019 a modernized range highlighting whiskies classified by age, thus providing a more accessible reading for enthusiasts and collectors.
