Quinta do Noval - Nacional 2019
Quinta do Noval is a prestigious Port wine house, founded in 1715, recognized as one of the few located in the heart of the Douro Valley, rather than in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Its iconic name comes from its most renowned vineyard, Quinta do Noval. Most of the vineyards of this quinta are carefully planted with the noble grape varieties of the Douro: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Cão. The grapes benefit from a unique terroir, composed of a mix of schist and clay soils, where the presence of rocks makes the harvest particularly complex and demanding for expert winemakers. Since 1994, meticulous replanting has been undertaken, adapting each plot to the variety best suited to its soil, altitude, and sun exposure, thus optimizing grape quality. At the heart of this vineyard lies an exceptional parcel of ungrafted vines, unique because they survived the terrible phylloxera epidemic in the 19th century. Since 1993, general management has been overseen by Christian Seely, who is also responsible for several prestigious European terroirs within the AXA Millésimes group, owner of exceptional estates such as Château Pichon-Longueville, Château Pibran, and Disznókő in Hungary.
The Nacional Vintage is an exceptional wine made from a blend of grape varieties, and not exclusively Touriga Nacional as its name might suggest. It includes some of the most noble grape varieties of the Douro Valley: Touriga Franca, Tinta Cão, Touriga Nacional, Sousão, and Tinta Roriz. The grapes are carefully foot-trodden to extract a high-quality must, then fermentation takes place in traditional lagares, the typical stone vats of the Quinta. This exceptional wine is then aged for 18 months in old oak vats with a capacity of 2500 liters, to give it depth, complexity, and elegance.
