In the beginning, the Savanna Estate, located in Saint-Paul at the foot of the majestic Réunion mountains, was originally an iconic sugar factory since the early 19th century. The Savanna distillery itself was established between 1948 and 1950, resulting from the innovative vision of Emile Hugot. A distinguished alumnus of the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris, Emile Hugot quickly became a key and internationally recognized figure in the sugar and rum industry. In 1982, thanks to a strategic contract, the Savanna distillery committed to a path of excellence that propelled it to the rank of premium rum producers, achieving such quality that it became the first European distillery certified ISO 9002, a guarantee of perfect mastery of manufacturing processes.
