Glen Scotia - 18 years - Campbeltown - 46%
Glen Scotia is an iconic distillery located in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland, a region known for its whiskies rich in character and history. Founded in 1832 under the name Scotia by Mayor James Stewart and Provost John Galbraith, the distillery has endured through the centuries preserving authentic craftsmanship and exceptional quality. In 1919, Glen Scotia was a founding member of the "West Highland Malt Distilleries" collective, a strategic partnership bringing together six Campbeltown distilleries to pool costs and safeguard the future of local production during difficult times.
In 1924, the distillery was acquired by Duncan MacCallum, also founder of Glen Nevis, before experiencing a temporary closure in 1928. After reopening in 1930 and a personal tragedy linked to MacCallum's bankruptcy, the establishment was taken over by Bloch Brothers, who added the term "Glen" to its name, thus consolidating the brand's identity. Legend has it that MacCallum's ghost still haunts the distillery, a living testimony to its rich past. From 1954 to the present day, Glen Scotia has undergone several ownership changes, a closure between 1984 and 1989, then a gradual resumption of production with Gibson International. Since 1999, the distillery has maintained continuous production, strengthened in 2014 when the Loch Lomond group acquired the brand, investing heavily to expand its capacity, modernize its infrastructure, and create a visitor center dedicated to passionate enthusiasts.
The Glen Scotia 18 years offers a refined and complex maturation: aged for 17 years in carefully selected Bourbon and American oak casks from multiple refills, it is then rigorously and expertly blended by the Master Blender. This malt is finished for 12 months in first-fill Sherry Oloroso casks, giving this whisky a unique aromatic depth, combining fruity, spicy, and woody notes, with a delicate creaminess on the palate that delights both connoisseurs and amateurs.
