Lillet Rouge
Lillet is an exceptional wine-based aperitif, crafted in Podensac, in the heart of the prestigious Bordeaux region. The Lillet Frères house, specialized in the trade of wines and spirits, was founded in 1872. The remarkable innovation of combining Bordeaux wines with exotic plants and fruits is credited to Father Kermann, a physician who went to Brazil under Louis XVI and later settled in Bordeaux. There, he developed unique liqueurs and tonics, highlighting primarily quinine, a key ingredient. In 1985, the Lillet family passed on their expertise to Bruno Borie, and in 2008, the company was integrated into a subsidiary of the Pernod Ricard group, thus ensuring the continuity of quality and tradition.
Lillet is meticulously crafted from fine wines (85%) rigorously selected and fruit and quinine liqueurs (15%). The fruit liqueurs are obtained by prolonged maceration of carefully chosen citrus peels: sweet orange from Morocco or Spain and bitter orange from Haiti or Peru. This artisanal process gives Lillet a unique aromatic complexity. Traditional aging in oak barrels adds richness and roundness to the final product, enhancing every tasting.
Lillet Rouge, created in 1962, is a sophisticated blend of white wines, citrus infusions (sweet and bitter oranges), quinine, and other fruits whose secret recipe remains closely guarded. This typical aperitif is enjoyed both in refined cocktails and diluted with tonic, offering a fresh, elegant, and balanced tasting experience.
