Ichiro’s Malt is an essential reference in the field of independent bottling of high-quality Japanese whisky. Founded by the visionary Ichiro Akuto, this exceptional brand comes to life in Chichibu, a charming town located about 100 km northwest of Tokyo. Nestled in modest premises, the distillery only has two small artisanal stills, illustrating traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations. Trained within the historic family business, Ichiro Akuto relies on a heritage dating back to 1625 with the Hanyu distillery, initially specialized in sake brewing, before obtaining an official whisky distillation license in 1941.
Continuing this family tradition, Akuto's father modernized production by importing two Scottish stills capable of producing up to 400 casks. Despite the major economic crisis in Japan in 2000, which led to the decline in sake consumption and the sale of the family distillery, Ichiro Akuto turned this challenge into a remarkable turning point. He recovered the stills as well as the precious maturing whisky casks from the new owners, thus preserving a unique heritage worldwide.
Today, Ichiro Akuto remains one of the most innovative and passionate Japanese distillers, perpetuating traditional know-how while exploring new techniques. More than 4,000 whisky casks, matured in Sherry, wine, and Bourbon barrels, age harmoniously in his warehouses. At the same time, he is developing an ambitious local agriculture project to grow his own Japanese barley, a sign of deep commitment to producing a 100% Japanese, authentic, and unique whisky.
This exclusive edition of CHICHIBU was distilled in 2013 and then aged for 8 years in a single cask No. 9664 that previously held wine, giving it rich and complex aromas. Only 263 bottles were released, making each bottle truly precious and rare.
