The prestigious Hepple estate spans over 1,600 hectares in the heart of the picturesque Simonside Hills, an iconic sandstone range crossing the center of Northumberland, reaching the lush meadows bordering the River Coquet, in northern England. This exceptional location benefits from a unique terroir, ideal for cultivating the botanical plants used in crafting their artisanal gin.
The famous chef and epicurean Valentine Warner brought together at Hepple the legendary bartender and renowned mixologist Nick Strangeway as well as the developer of the Cairbry Hill distillery, to meet in March 2013 Walter Riddell, the passionate owner of the Hepple estate. Their common goal: to capture the pure and authentic essence of juniper in an exceptional gin. To achieve this, they completely rethought every step of the traditional gin-making process.
Indeed, classic distillation, often carried out at 80 degrees, tends to alter the delicate flavors of the botanicals, especially those of juniper. To preserve these subtle aromas, the team explored innovative methods such as vacuum distillation, ultrasound extraction, and other advanced techniques, allowing maximum aromatic expression and remarkable purity of the gin.
In autumn 2014, Chris Garden, a renowned distiller from the Sipsmith house, joined the project in Newcastle, where his wife's family lived. Captivated by this innovative approach, Chris, despite his initial declaration never to produce gin again, enthusiastically got involved. Hepple Gin was officially launched in October 2015, quickly becoming a must-have reference in the world of premium gins.
Since mid-2020, the Hepple estate has also committed to an ambitious sustainable land management plan. This eco-responsible approach aims to promote natural and balanced regeneration of wild plants through the introduction of an extensive grazing regime. This project contributes to local biodiversity and ensures the sustainability of the natural ingredients used in distilling their exceptional gin.
