The label still affixed to this bottle allows for precise dating of this period. The contents of this bottle are therefore an exceptional whisky, predating 1925, offering a valuable glimpse into the history of Scottish whisky.
These exceptional bottles were recently discovered in an abandoned Bordeaux mansion, carefully preserved in a cellar sealed since their purchase prior to 1930, the date when this cellar was closed. James Buchanan was born in 1849 in Ontario, Canada, before moving to Scotland to work with the blending agent Charles Mackinlay & Co. In 1884, he founded his own company and made whisky history. With W.P. Lowrie, he created the first Buchanan Blend, composed of whiskies from renowned distilleries such as Dalwhinnie, Clynelish, and Glendullan, specially designed to appeal to the English palate. This blend was so successful that it became the preferred drink at the House of Commons bar. Buchanan renamed his creation in honor of this institution. Better known for its distinctive monochrome packaging, the whisky Black & White, affectionately nicknamed as such, officially adopted this name in 1902. The company merged with John Dewar & Sons in 1915, forming Buchanan-Dewar, which later joined DCL in 1925. Its modern version, produced by Diageo, continues this exceptional expertise today.
