Jean Foillard - Morgon Côte du Py 2023
Since the 1980s, Jean Foillard has established himself as one of the leading figures in Beaujolais and the natural wine movement. Based in Morgon, he cultivates his vines with a respectful approach: soils worked without chemicals, hand-harvested, vinified with indigenous yeasts, long carbonic macerations, and very little sulfur. His vintages are among the most sought-after, recognized for their purity, aromatic intensity, and timeless elegance.
The Côte du Py is Morgon's most emblematic terroir, made up of schist and granite soils rich in manganese. This is where Gamay reaches its finest expression, producing deep, distinguished wines perfect for aging. The 2023 vintage, marked by generous sunshine tempered by cool nights, produced concentrated and balanced grapes, resulting in a wine that combines intensity and freshness. True to his style, Jean Foillard has created a harmonious, precise and extremely refined Côte du Py.
The deep garnet color betrays a concentration superior to the Morgon "Classique". The nose, intense and complex, combines notes of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry) with floral (peony, violet) and mineral (flint) touches, enhanced by sweet spices. On the palate, the attack is ample and silky, supported by fine tannins and a solid structure. The mineral framework gives remarkable tension, balancing the fruity richness. The finish is long, persistent, marked by a depth and energy that augurs superb aging potential. A great terroir wine, which illustrates the nobility of Gamay when cultivated and vinified with rigor.
