Domaine Caroline Morey - Santenay 1er Cru - La Comme 2023
Domaine Caroline Morey is located in Chassagne-Montrachet, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, a region renowned for the precision and elegance of its wines. Caroline Morey, from a family deeply rooted in the Burgundy vineyard, worked for a long time at Domaine Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey before creating her own estate in 2014 following the transfer of family parcels located notably in Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay, and Beaune. The vineyard covers about seven hectares spread over several appellations of the Côte de Beaune, with particular attention paid to understanding the terroirs and meticulous soil work. Viticulture is conducted in a reasoned manner with a low-intervention approach in the cellar to preserve the identity of each climate. The premier cru La Comme is located in Santenay, in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, on a hillside that extends some terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet. This reputed climate produces fine and structured wines, capable of precisely expressing the Pinot Noir grown on these limestone soils. The 2023 vintage illustrates this quest for balance between aromatic finesse, freshness, and structure.
The Santenay 1er Cru La Comme 2023 is made exclusively from Pinot Noir coming from parcels located on the limestone slopes of the La Comme climate. The typical clay-limestone soils of the Côte de Beaune allow a gradual ripening of the grapes while maintaining a natural acidity essential to the wine's balance. The vinification favors gentle extraction to preserve the natural elegance of the grape variety. A portion of whole bunches may be included during fermentation to bring complexity and aromatic finesse. The aging then continues in oak barrels for several months, with a moderate proportion of new wood intended to accompany the wine's structure without masking the expression of the terroir. This approach gives rise to a precise and refined Pinot Noir, marked by the purity of the fruit and the delicacy of the tannins. The wine thus reflects the personality of the La Comme climate, known for producing reds that are both structured and elegant.
On the palate, this Santenay 1er Cru La Comme 2023 reveals a delicate nose dominated by aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, and fresh cherry, accompanied by floral and slightly spicy nuances. The mouth is elegant and balanced, supported by a silky texture and fresh acidity that highlights the precision of the fruit. The tannins remain fine and well integrated, providing a discreet structure that supports the whole without weighing down the wine. The aromatic expression evokes crunchy red berries with a subtle touch of undergrowth and soft spices. The balance between freshness and finesse gives the wine great drinkability in its youth while suggesting an interesting evolution with a few years of bottle aging. The finish, long and harmonious, extends the fruity notes with an elegant mineral sensation. This wine pairs particularly well with roasted poultry, veal fillet, mushrooms, or aged cheeses.
