Château Combel la Serre - A Cherry Tree, Stones and Pigs 2023
Château Combel la Serre is located in the Cahors region of the Lot, in the South West . It was founded in 1998 by Jean-Pierre and Martine Ilbert . Jean-Pierre worked in a cooperative winery, which he decided to leave to settle on the plot of Combel where they live and which is covered with vines. La Serre is the name of the plot opposite where the agricultural buildings are located. In the early years, they sold the wine "in bulk" by the hectoliter in order to begin the necessary investments for the operation: construction of a new cellar, purchase of vats, winemaking equipment, etc. In 2003, when the son, Julien, officially settled with his parents, they took a turn and decided to sell their wine in bottles. Today, the estate covers 23 hectares, cultivated using certified organic farming .
Due to a complicated 2023 vintage, the estate's three usual single-plot vintages (Au Cerisier, Le Lac aux Cochons and Les Peyres Levades) were blended in concrete vats. This cuvée, " Un Cerisier, des Pierres et des Cochons ", is made from Côt Noir (Malbec). The grapes come from several plots on the limestone Causse, all located at an altitude of over 300 meters. The average age of the vines is 40 years. Vinification is traditional with a maceration of around 30 days. Aging lasts around 15 months in concrete vats .
Grape variety: 100% Côt Noir (Malbec)
"This unique wine tells a story of adaptation and terroir: a vibrant nose of juicy black fruits, a hint of burlat cherry, fine pepper, and discreet violet. The palate is dense yet lively, combining altitude freshness and a chalky texture."
