Château du Cèdre - Cuvée le Cèdre 2014
The Château du Cèdre is one of the reference estates of the Cahors appellation, located on the most beautiful limestone plateaus of Quercy, near Vire-sur-Lot. Managed by the brothers Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe, the estate has embodied for several decades a demanding and modern vision of Malbec, combining depth, precision, and elegance. The vineyard extends over about thirty hectares, mainly planted on limestone causses, historic terroirs of Cahors known for their ability to produce wines with great aging potential. The vineyard work is conducted in certified organic agriculture, with particular attention paid to soil life and the natural balance of the plant. Yields are deliberately limited to promote concentration and aromatic complexity. Château du Cèdre has established itself as a major player in the qualitative renewal of Cahors, regularly cited among the great estates of the Southwest.
The Cuvée Le Cèdre 2014 represents the most ambitious and emblematic expression of the estate. Made mostly from Malbec, complemented by a small proportion of Merlot, it comes from the oldest vines located on the finest limestone terroirs of the estate. The 2014 vintage, marked by a moderate summer and a favorable end of the season, allowed a progressive ripening of the grapes, offering balance, freshness, and great precision. The vinification is carried out rigorously, followed by a long and controlled aging in barrels, intended to refine the structure without masking the identity of the wine. This cuvée stands out for its ability to combine natural power and elegance of texture. It fully belongs to the lineage of great age-worthy Cahors, deep and refined.
On tasting, Le Cèdre 2014 reveals a complex nose of ripe black fruits, blackcurrant, and plum, enriched with spicy notes, cocoa, and graphite. The palate is ample, dense, and structured, supported by fine and perfectly integrated tannins. The balance between body, freshness, and mineral tension gives the wine a remarkable length. The finish is long, deep, and persistent, revealing a mineral dimension typical of great limestone terroirs. This wine will ideally accompany red meats, game, or refined gourmet cuisine. It has excellent aging potential, capable of expressing itself over several decades under good storage conditions.
