Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia - Masseto 2018
In Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, Masseto holds a unique place among great Italian wines thanks to a vineyard entirely dedicated to Merlot and a terroir of blue clays that has become emblematic. Historically linked to Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, Masseto has gradually asserted an autonomous identity, built around this small plot located near the Tyrrhenian Sea. The deep clay soils provide a precious water reserve and give the wine its density, texture, and controlled power that characterize the great vintages of the estate. The maritime influence tempers the heat extremes and promotes a regular ripening of the Merlot. The 2018 vintage stands out for a more balanced and less extreme cycle than some particularly hot years, with conditions allowing freshness and aromatic precision to be preserved. This configuration has produced a Masseto that is both deep, velvety, and remarkably harmonious. The natural richness of the cru remains framed here by a fresh structure and a tannic grain of great finesse.
Masseto 2018 is made exclusively from Merlot, harvested plot by plot according to the maturity of the different vineyard sectors. Grapes from the deepest clay areas bring density and structure, while other plots contribute to the overall balance and aromatic complexity. The different components are vinified separately before blending to preserve the personality of each sector. Fermentation and maceration are conducted with precision to extract a deep matter without losing the elegance of the fruit. The prolonged aging in French oak barrels then accompanies the wine and gradually refines the tannins. In 2018, the texture is particularly silky, with a richness less demonstrative than in the sunniest vintages. The wine already has great cohesion, but its structure will allow it to gain even more complexity over many years.
The color shows a very deep garnet with still intense ruby reflections. The nose opens on blackberry, black plum, and cherry, accompanied by violet, cocoa, and licorice. With aeration, notes of cedar, blond tobacco, fine spices, graphite, and a balsamic touch gradually appear. The palate is ample and velvety but retains remarkable freshness that gives momentum to the matter. The tannins are fine, tight, and perfectly ripe, giving a sensation of depth without heaviness. The black fruit remains precise and intense, while notes of cocoa, spices, and fine earth progressively gain importance. The finish is long, deep, and persistent, with an almost creamy texture supported by a tension that prolongs the tasting. Masseto 2018 will accompany a roasted beef fillet, a rack of lamb, pigeon, porcini risotto, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
