"Why aren't there any whisky distilleries in Sweden?" one of the friends wondered. None of the others could answer, leaving the question hanging in the air. Sweden does not have a centuries-old tradition of whisky production, yet when these three friends explored the possibility of creating a unique Swedish Single Malt whisky, they discovered immense potential: Sweden offers some of the purest and most crystalline water in the world, naturally filtered since the last Ice Age. It is no coincidence that the distillery is located near a rock, benefiting from permanent access to this exceptionally high-quality water. The barley grown in Sweden develops a specific sweetness thanks to the long sunny days of the Nordic summer — a characteristic that has become essential in the aromatic profile of Mackmyra whisky.
A large part of the whisky is aged in new Swedish oak barrels. The local oak grows slowly in this harsh climate, which gives the whisky a firmer and more robust structure compared to traditional American oak. The result is a whisky with lively spices, balanced by a sweetness reminiscent of caramelized sugar, thus offering a unique aromatic complexity. Today, this group of friends, accompanied by Angela d’Orazio, the talented master blender, continues this quest for innovation and exploration started in 1999 by producing a whisky without additives, respecting the environment as much as possible through sustainable and responsible practices.
Since winter 2013, two limited editions are launched each year. This Seasonal series offers original finishes, meticulously chosen to reflect the spirit of the current season. Mackmyra Björksav (birch sap) generously draws inspiration from the long-awaited return of spring. This unique expression is partly aged in barrels seasoned with Swedish birch sap wine, in exclusive collaboration with the local producer Grythyttan, thus bringing fresh and delicate notes to this exceptional whisky. The maturation includes 30% in Bourbon barrels, 24% in Oloroso barrels, 20% in barrels seasoned with birch sap, 18% in other types of seasoned barrels, and 8% in Swedish oak barrels, creating a perfect balance between richness, sweetness, and complexity.
