Paul Barre - Leeloo Cuvée 2022
Paul Barre Leeloo Cuvée 2022 is one of the freest and most joyful wines from the family-owned Barre estate in Fronsac. Historically associated with Paul Barre, a pioneer of Bordeaux biodynamics, the vineyard is now managed by Édith and Gabriel Barre in a family continuity deeply attached to life. Located in Libournais, between Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac, the estate works clay-sandy and clay-limestone terroirs with an artisanal, sincere, and low-intervention approach. Leeloo embodies the cheeky cuvée of the house, designed for fruit, conviviality, and immediate energy. Its name echoes The Fifth Element, like a special cuvée produced when the vintage allows it. The sunny and generous 2022 vintage in Bordeaux yields a crunchy, supple, and particularly gourmand red. It is a pleasure wine, atypical in the Bordeaux landscape, both natural in its expression and very easy to share.
The cuvée is made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, two emblematic grape varieties of the Bordeaux right bank. Merlot brings fruit, roundness, flesh, and that immediate sensation of suppleness in the mouth. Cabernet Franc complements the blend with more freshness, liveliness, floral notes, and spicy relief. The vines rest on a clay-sandy soil, which favors a lighter, more fluid, and crunchier expression than classic Bordeaux reds. The vinification is deliberately atypical for Bordeaux, seeking bright fruit, drinkability, and spontaneity. The wine may present a slight sparkle upon opening, a sign of a lively profile that just needs a few moments to breathe in the glass or decanter. The result is a frank, juicy, and digestible red that favors fruit brightness over power or oakiness.
In the glass, the wine reveals a bright ruby red color full of brilliance. The nose opens with cherry, raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrant, and fresh red berries, with a touch of licorice and a slightly mentholated nuance. The palate is round, crunchy, and very accessible, supported by fine tannins and freshness that lengthens the finish. The fruit remains at the forefront, without heaviness, with a sensation of a lively, spontaneous, and joyful wine. This 2022 is best enjoyed young, after a short aeration, to enjoy its energy and gourmand side. It will perfectly accompany a platter of fine charcuterie, roasted poultry, grilled meats, a quality burger, bistro cuisine, roasted vegetables, or a soft cheese. Serve slightly chilled, around 15 to 16°C, to enhance its crunchy and thirst-quenching character.
