Clos Rougeard - Brézé 2020
Clos Rougeard is one of the most legendary estates in the Loire Valley, located in Chacé, in the heart of Saumurois, in a landscape of limestone hills and cellars dug into tuffeau stone. A rare and sought-after reference, the estate has built its reputation on an exceptionally precise interpretation of Cabernet Franc, but also on a great Chenin blanc that has become cult. The vineyard covers 15 hectares divided into 25 plots, mainly on clay and limestone soils, with an extremely attentive approach to soil life. Since 2017, the Bouygues family has continued the story of Clos Rougeard with the desire to preserve the identity of the cru and the uniqueness of its wines. The estate claims an old organic farming practice, conducted with a deep respect for plants, time, and natural balances. In this world where rarity feeds legend, Brézé holds a special place, as it embodies the only great white expression of the estate. This 2020 Saumur blanc thus reflects the nobility of Ligérien Chenin when it meets a very high-level limestone terroir.
The Brézé 2020 cuvée comes from several Chenin plots located on the eponymous Brézé hill, a historic sector of Saumurois known for its great age-worthy whites. The limestone terroir brings tension, salinity, and a chalky dimension that distinguishes the finest Loire Chenins. The 2020 vintage, generous and sunny in many Ligérien areas, offers here a broad reading of the grape variety without erasing the deep freshness of the place. Available information indicates barrel aging, consistent with the Clos Rougeard style, whose wines gain depth thanks to time spent in wood and then in the cellar. The wine is built less on immediate brightness than on density, texture, and persistence. Its rarity is as much due to the estate's prestige as to the precision of this parcel origin, which combines aromatic richness and mineral energy. Brézé 2020 presents itself as a great Loire white that is both powerful, vibrant, and designed for aging.
On tasting, Clos Rougeard Brézé 2020 offers a luminous golden robe, announcing a Chenin of substance and depth. The nose may evoke ripe pear, yellow apple, white flowers, fine honey, fresh almond, and a slightly spicy touch linked to aging. On the palate, the wine stands out with a broad, almost enveloping texture, immediately balanced by a very clear limestone tension. The fruit's richness remains contained by a saline framework that lengthens the wine and gives it a sense of great precision. The persistent and chalky finish leaves a sensation both ripe, fresh, and deeply mineral. This Saumur blanc will ideally accompany roasted turbot, creamy poultry, noble shellfish, morel risotto, or aged goat cheese. Its aging potential is significant, and the 2020 vintage can still gain complexity with several years in the cellar.
