The Duchess is an independent bottler owned by Dutchman Nils Van Rijn.

This edition was distilled in 1997 at the Uitvlugt Distillery , in Guyana. The rum was aged for 24 years and matured in Cognac barrels .

Uitvlugt is a village in Guyana , based on the west bank of the Demerara River, but the name is Dutch. The Dutch-owned Uitvlugt distillery was established around 1750, housing double wooden stills that produced rum high in esters. However, in 1975 the government began to privatize the sugar plantations and distilleries, which led to the closure of Uitvglut in 2000. The only remaining distillery in Guyana is the Diamond Distillery, which acquired the stills from Uitvlugt .
