Domaine Sébastien Magnien - Pommard 2023
In Meloisey, on the heights of the Côte de Beaune, Sébastien Magnien continues a family winemaking tradition whose roots go back several generations. After joining the estate in 2004, he gradually established a Burgundian approach based on precise vinifications and respect for the identity of each appellation. His vineyard stretches from the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune to the terroirs of Meursault, Volnay, and Pommard, offering a diversity of soils and exposures that is reflected in the personality of his wines. In Pommard, the clay-limestone formations, often rich in clays and iron oxides, traditionally give rise to Pinot Noirs endowed with a strong structure and real depth. The estate's work consists of preserving this identity without seeking excessive extraction, in order to maintain the aromatic finesse and freshness of the grape variety. This interpretation of Pommard thus favors the balance between the natural density of the terroir and a precise expression of the fruit.
The 2023 vintage benefits from an overall favorable season in Burgundy, with a warm summer and ripening conditions that allowed for expressive and generous Pinot Noirs. For Sébastien Magnien, the challenge is to preserve the natural freshness of the grapes while seeking sufficient tannic maturity to express the character of Pommard. The vines are cultivated according to the principles of reasoned viticulture, without chemical herbicides or insecticides, with regular soil work by plowing. The harvest is done manually, followed by careful sorting in the vineyard and then in the cellar. Traditional vinification is based on macerations of about three weeks, promoting a gradual extraction of matter and tannins. The estate's red wines are then aged exclusively in oak barrels for twelve to eighteen months, depending on the appellations. This method allows the Pinot Noir to develop its depth and complexity while maintaining an expression faithful to the terroir.
This 2023 Pommard should offer a deep ruby robe and an aromatic profile dominated by black cherry, ripe raspberry, and small wild berries. Upon aeration, nuances of violet, sweet spices, and undergrowth could gradually enrich its bouquet. On the palate, the generosity of the vintage suggests a full-bodied matter, structured by present but not overly harsh tannins. The natural freshness of the Pinot Noir brings relief to the whole and extends a fruity, slightly spicy finish. A few years of aging will allow the wine to develop more complex notes of fine leather, dead leaves, and mushrooms, while refining its structure. Its gastronomic character will pair particularly well with roasted pigeon, a beef filet with porcini mushrooms, duck breast, or free-range poultry accompanied by wild mushrooms. A tasting around 15 to 16 °C will preserve the finesse of its aromas and fully appreciate its evolution.
