Domaine Nicolas Rossignol - Pommard Les Noizons 2022
On the heights of Pommard, the Les Noizons climate offers a particularly interesting interpretation of this Côte de Beaune appellation, often associated with powerful and solidly structured Pinot Noirs. Located on the hillside overlooking the village, this lieu-dit benefits from an elevated position and stony clay-limestone soils that promote drainage and help preserve the freshness of the grapes. Nicolas Rossignol, from a long line of Volnay winemakers, founded his own estate in 1997 before settling in Beaune, from where he now manages a vineyard spread across several Côte de Beaune appellations. His approach is based on careful observation of the plots, attentive viticulture to soil life, and vinifications adapted to the characteristics of each terroir. Les Noizons particularly illustrates this philosophy, with a Pinot Noir whose finesse and energy nuance the structure traditionally associated with Pommard. This location on the heights of the hillside gives it a personality distinct from wines from the more clayey and deeper sectors of the appellation.
The 2022 vintage benefited in Burgundy from generous sunshine and favorable ripening conditions, producing concentrated Pinot Noirs without necessarily sacrificing their freshness. Les Noizons comes from several plots aged about fifteen to seventy-five years, located above the premier crus Argillières and Épenots. Their full south exposure and red soils, characteristic of Pommard, favor complete ripening of the grapes and explain the natural richness of this cuvée. Nicolas Rossignol cultivates his vines according to biodynamic-inspired practices, without chemical herbicides, favoring plowing and careful observation of vegetative cycles. Harvesting is exclusively manual, followed by meticulous sorting before vinification conducted with indigenous yeasts. Punch-downs and pump-overs are adapted to the ripeness of the grapes, while aging on fine lees in oak barrels gradually supports the wine's structure. This approach preserves the generosity of the vintage while maintaining the identity of a terroir whose depth and structure can rival some premier crus.
Les Noizons 2022 should express a generous aromatic profile, dominated by black cherry, blackberry, and ripe raspberry, accompanied by nuances of violet and sweet spices. Aeration may reveal deeper notes of licorice, fresh earth, and black fruits, characteristic of Pinot Noirs from Pommard's red soils. On the palate, the vintage's ripeness suggests a broad and fleshy body, structured by present tannins but ripe enough to maintain a enveloping texture. The natural freshness of the grape variety adds relief to this richness, while the finish should extend on black fruits and a discreet spicy dimension. Despite its village appellation classification, this cuvée has a constitution that justifies several years of aging in the cellar. It will pair particularly well with roasted pigeon, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, duck breast, or confit lamb shoulder, whose flavors will respond to its depth. Opening after a few years of aging will allow greater appreciation of the finesse of its tannins and the development of its aromatic nuances.
