Domaine de Baronarques White 2022
In Saint-Polycarpe, on the heights of Limoux, the Domaine de Baronarques cultivates a unique vision of the great whites of Languedoc. Acquired in 1998 by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her two sons, this former estate underwent a profound restructuring of its vineyard and technical facilities. Its location on the first foothills of the Pyrenees gives it a particular climatic environment, at the meeting point of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. The Chardonnay plots occupy clay-limestone slopes whose altitude favors nighttime freshness and a gradual ripening of the grapes. This geographical situation allows the estate to seek an expression of Chardonnay that combines the richness of southern terroirs with a more unusual tension at these latitudes. Since 2019, a small proportion of Chenin blanc has complemented the blend, bringing an additional dimension to the freshness and precision of the wine. Baronarques thus asserts an original identity within the Limoux appellation, with a white whose depth and aging potential reflect the ambitions of the Rothschild family.
The 2022 vintage blends 97% Chardonnay and 3% Chenin blanc, from an eleven-hectare vineyard whose vines have an average age of seventeen years. The year was marked by a mild and relatively dry winter, followed by an early spring and a particularly hot summer, punctuated by several heatwave episodes. Under these conditions, the Chardonnay began budburst as early as March 21, and the estate experienced the earliest vintage in its history. The harvest of the white grape varieties took place from August 22 to September 2, allowing the preservation of the grape balance despite the high temperatures. The selection of plots and the precision of harvest dates played an essential role in maintaining aromatic freshness. The wine then benefited from eight months of barrel aging, with 25% new oak, to develop its texture without imposing an excessive woody presence. The result reflects the generous character of 2022, while retaining the tension and finesse that distinguish the high-altitude whites of Limoux.
The pale yellow robe, crossed with green reflections, precedes a delicate bouquet of acacia flowers, pear, and white fruits, enriched with vegetal nuances evoking fern and infusions. Upon aeration, notes of white pepper and spices appear, accompanied by a discreet mineral impression. The attack is ample and supple, with a generous body that reflects the maturity of the Chardonnay and the natural richness of the vintage. The palate gradually develops a firm and savory texture, punctuated by notes of fresh butter, lightly toasted bread, and clove. A well-present acidity brings relief to the whole, while the Chenin contributes to preserving the tension and length of the wine. The persistent and delicately spiced finish recalls white fruits and a freshness that balances the depth of the body. This gastronomic white will pair particularly well with roasted turbot with beurre blanc, pan-seared scallops, morel chicken, or porcini risotto, while possessing enough structure to continue its evolution in the cellar.
