Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur - Volnay Pitures 1er Cru 2020
At the foot of the Volnay hillside, just steps from the border with Pommard, the Pitures vineyard holds a unique position among the premier crus of this prestigious Côte de Beaune appellation. Less famous than the Caillerets or Taillepieds, it nevertheless produces Pinot Noir wines of remarkable character, combining the floral delicacy typical of Volnay with a more pronounced structure inherited from its proximity to Pommard. Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur has an intimate knowledge of these terroirs, the result of several generations of viticulture in the villages of Volnay and Meursault. Born from the union of two Burgundian winemaking families, it is now led by François Bitouzet, who continues a demanding approach based on respect for the soils and precision in vinification. Mechanical soil work, manual harvesting, and measured use of oak contribute to this quest for authenticity. In a range particularly rich in premier crus, Les Pitures stands out for its robust character, depth, and ability to age gracefully. It represents a more earthy and structured facet of Volnay, without ever sacrificing the finesse that makes the village renowned.
Located to the north of the appellation, extending the premier crus of Pommard, the Les Pitures vineyard rests on clay-limestone soils where the clays help give the Pinot Noir more body and density. The domaine's plot benefits from this particular situation, which favors regular ripening while maintaining good natural freshness. The grapes are hand-harvested, then vinified using a traditional method, with gradual extraction intended to preserve the finesse of the tannins and aromatic precision. Aging in oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new wood, then accompanies the softening of the wine without masking the expression of the terroir. The 2020 vintage, marked in Burgundy by a hot, dry, and particularly early season, produced concentrated grapes with thick skins and remarkable phenolic maturity. Despite these summer conditions, the red wines often retained surprisingly lively acidity, resulting in balances combining richness and energy. In this context, Les Pitures 2020 fully expresses its temperament, with a concentration superior to that of cooler vintages and a structure that promises particularly interesting evolution.
The deep ruby color, with still discreet garnet reflections, announces a Pinot Noir of beautiful intensity. The bouquet opens with aromas of black cherry, blackberry, and ripe raspberry, mingled with notes of violet, licorice, and sweet spices. With aeration, more complex nuances of fresh earth, undergrowth, and cocoa emerge, adding an additional dimension to the fruit expression. The palate has a generous attack, followed by dense and velvety matter, supported by tight but perfectly ripe tannins. A well-present acidity balances this richness and gives the wine a beautiful dynamism, while the finish stretches out on notes of black fruits, fine pepper, and damp stone. More structured than many Volnays, this premier cru will find its place alongside roasted pigeon with wild mushrooms, beef fillet with shallots, duck with cherries, or lightly caramelized veal sweetbreads. Still young in its expression, it deserves a few more years in the cellar to soften its tannic framework and develop the nuances of truffle, fine leather, and undergrowth that characterize great Burgundian Pinot Noirs at maturity.
