The Domaine des Comtes Lafon is one of the historic great names of the Côte de Beaune, located in Meursault and globally recognized for the depth of its whites as well as the increasing finesse of its reds. Founded around the heritage established by Jules Lafon at the end of the 19th century, the estate has established itself as a major reference in Burgundy thanks to a constant demand for excellence in soil work, vinifications, and aging. Under the impetus of Dominique Lafon, then with the arrival of Léa and Pierre Lafon, the property has continued to pursue precision, freshness, and expression of the place. The Volnay 2023 holds a particularly interesting place in the range, as it offers a rare entry point to the estate's reds. Coming from young vines in the Santenots sector, it carries part of the identity of this emblematic terroir, while offering a more immediate, supple, and accessible expression than the Premiers Crus. This wine perfectly illustrates the elegance that the Comtes Lafon know how to bring to Pinot Noir. The Volnay 2023 cuvée is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, the king grape of Burgundy reds. Its uniqueness comes from its parcel origin, linked to the young vines of Santenots, a terroir located in Meursault but historically associated with the Volnay appellation for reds. This area produces wines often deeper and more structured than the aerial image sometimes associated with Volnay, while maintaining great grain finesse. The estate favors delicate vinification, with destemmed grapes and fermentation carried out without excessive extraction, to preserve the fruit's brightness and the softness of the tannins. Aging in barrels, including a measured proportion of new wood, supports the structure without masking the character of Pinot Noir. The result is a Burgundy red that is both precise, lively, and very readable, less dense than the Santenots du Milieu, but endowed with immediate charm and good holding. This Volnay village thus reflects the current style of the estate, more infused, finer, with a large place left to the purity of the fruit.

The nose opens on fresh raspberry, red cherry, plum, with floral nuances of violet, a hint of lavender, and fine spicy notes. The palate is supple, slender, and very pleasant, carried by precise red fruit and a velvety texture. The tannins remain fine, moderate, and well integrated, giving the wine an accessible silhouette without removing its seriousness. The finish, fresh and slightly earthy, recalls the Burgundian origin of the wine and extends the tasting with great delicacy. This Volnay 2023 can be enjoyed in its youth after slight aeration, but it will gain harmony after a few years in the cellar.
