Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur - Volnay 2022
In Volnay, a village in the Côte de Beaune whose red wines are among the most delicate in Burgundy, Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur continues a family tradition deeply attached to expressing the terroirs. Born from the union of two winemaking lineages established in Volnay and Meursault, it possesses a remarkable heritage of parcels spread between these two appellations. François Bitouzet today continues the work begun by previous generations, with particular attention to the quality of the grapes and the precision of the vinifications. The estate favors viticulture attentive to soil life, controlled yields, and measured cellar interventions. While its premier crus, notably Taillepieds and Caillerets, illustrate the geological diversity of Volnay, its village cuvées offer an equally interesting reading of the village's identity. On these clay-limestone slopes, Pinot Noir develops a fine texture and aromatic delicacy that distinguish Volnay from its more structured neighbors in Pommard. The estate precisely seeks this balance between fruit depth, tannin suppleness, and terroir transparency, without yielding to the temptation of power.
The Volnay 2022 comes from several parcels located within the communal territory, whose blend allows the expression of the different nuances of the appellation. The limestone soils, combined with varying proportions of clay and marl, contribute both to the aromatic finesse of the wine and its mouthfeel. The vines are carefully tended throughout the season to preserve the balance between phenolic maturity and the natural freshness of Pinot Noir. After a manual harvest, the vinification follows a traditional Burgundian approach, with progressive extraction aimed at obtaining fine tannins rather than excessive concentration. Aging in oak barrels then accompanies the softening of the structure and the development of aromas, without seeking a dominant woody imprint. The 2022 vintage, marked by a favorable spring and a hot, dry summer, produced grapes of beautiful maturity in the Côte de Beaune, often accompanied by greater freshness than the climatic conditions might have suggested. This combination is particularly suitable for Volnay, where the generosity of the fruit must always retain enough liveliness to preserve the natural elegance of the appellation.
In its youth, the Volnay 2022 from Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur expresses a range of ripe red fruits, dominated by cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, mingled with nuances of peony and violet. The bouquet gradually gains depth with touches of fresh undergrowth, delicate spices, and a discreet earthy note characteristic of Côte de Beaune Pinot Noirs. The palate favors fluidity and precision, with a supple yet sufficiently dense body to give the wine a true presence. The tannins, fine and delicately powdered, accompany the fruit without ever hardening the tasting, while a well-integrated acidity maintains a pleasant sensation of freshness. The finish, persistent and subtly spiced, leaves an impression of finesse rather than power, faithful to the personality of the best Volnay village wines. This Burgundy red will pair perfectly with veal filet with chanterelles, roasted pigeon, farm-raised guinea fowl, or duck breast served with a lightly reduced jus. Enjoyable after a few years in bottle, it can also continue to evolve in the cellar, developing aromas of dead leaves, light truffle, and candied fruits, without losing the delicacy that is its main attraction.
