Nestled in Kirkwall, on the wild coast of the Orkney Islands in the north of Scotland, the Scapa distillery is one of the most northerly in the country. Founded in 1885 by Macfarlane & Townsend, it has survived decades of history, notably marked by a spectacular fire in 1919, brought under control thanks to a human chain of local sailors. In 1954, it was rebuilt after its purchase by Hiram Walker & Sons Ltd , now part of the Pernod Ricard group. The distillery went dormant in 1994, partially restarted in 1997, before a complete rebirth in 2005 thanks to significant investment. Scapa remains an artisanal structure, operated by a small team of three people working in continuous rotation, 24 hours a day. Distillation relies on an extremely rare Lomond still , a vestige of a production method that has now almost disappeared. Production, which is confidential, does not exceed one million liters per year , and all the whiskies are unpeated .
The Scapa 16 year old , newly introduced to the permanent range, is aged entirely in American oak barrels that have contained bourbon , highlighting the finesse and smoothness characteristic of the house.
