"Fans of the whole world know at least by reputation the rieslings of Egon Müller, born from one of the most beautiful German terroirs, in Saarland. Of these wines, Egon Müller - fourth of the name - simply says that he cannot no better than his father. But after the collapse of the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia and the partition of the country into two entities, he seized the opportunity to revive the old estate of his in-laws in the Slovak region of Stúrovo .... In 1999, the aunt of Egon Müller's wife began to rebuild the old family estate, and the restored castle was transformed into a very beautiful hotel.The vines are located on the land of Muzla at the limit of the village of Belá on the left bank of the Danube, which forms, in the south of the country, the border of Slovakia with Hungary ... The hillsides face due south on a limestone subsoil covered with a thin loess layer The climate is continental (severe winters and hot summers). nt be frequent and abundant during the summer, or even until mid-October, at harvest time. Egon Müller's entry onto the scene was in 2001, his first Slovak vintage, with an ambition for quality: grassy vines, very little fertilizer, measured yields (45-50 hl / ha). The grapes are harvested at maturity - essential for enhancing the terroir -, transported in small crates and placed whole, not destemmed, in the press. The juice undergoes settling for 24 hours and, if necessary, cooling to 16 ° C. No chaptalisation: the wine is generally around 13 °, with more or less residual sugars. Fermentation takes place in 50 hl stainless steel vats, slowly due to the cold of winter, and malolactic fermentation is blocked, a common practice in countries with hot summers to preserve essential acidity and reduce the risk of wine "stinging" .
