The Sadie Family - Kokerboom - Sémillon 2024
The Sadie Family is among the most influential estates in South Africa, driven by the exacting vision of Eben Sadie and recognized for its precise work on the great terroirs of the Cape. The Kokerboom cuvée comes from Citrusdal Mountain, a remote and arid area in the northwest of the country, near the Cederberg mountains. This isolated vineyard rests on very poor sandy and sandstone soils, subjected to strong temperature variations and constant winds from the Atlantic. The Sémillon vines are extremely old, planted in bush vine style and cultivated without irrigation, naturally limiting yields. Their advanced age and perfect adaptation to the environment give the wine a rare depth and uniqueness. Kokerboom is thus one of the most emblematic cuvées of the parcel work led by Eben Sadie.
The 2024 Sémillon Kokerboom stands out with an expression that is both intense, structured, and decidedly mineral of the grape variety. The nose reveals notes of beeswax, ripe lemon, dry herbs, and warm stone, with an almost smoky dimension. The palate is ample and textured, supported by dense matter but perfectly balanced by persistent natural acidity. The structure is straight, tense, with a sensation of depth that develops slowly with aeration. The aging, deliberately discreet, respects the identity of the wine and highlights the purity of the fruit and terroir. The whole offers a very precise reading of South African Sémillon, far from any heaviness or exuberance.
This 2024 vintage confirms Kokerboom's status as one of the great dry Sémillons on the international scene. The wine has remarkable aging potential, evolving towards complex notes of dried fruits, fine honey, and saline hints over the years. At the table, it pairs ideally with noble fish, white meats, or cuisines with delicate textures. Its length and structure make it a gastronomic wine, but also a wine for contemplation for discerning enthusiasts. Kokerboom embodies a demanding and radical vision of terroir wine, where every detail counts. A rare and deeply expressive cuvée, a faithful reflection of Eben Sadie's work and the uniqueness of Citrusdal Mountain.
