Jean Foillard - Morgon - Classic 2024
Jean Foillard is one of the most emblematic names of Morgon, a major cru of Beaujolais, where Gamay takes on a deep, silky dimension and is capable of aging gracefully. Based in Villié-Morgon, he has established himself as an essential figure in natural wines, alongside Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton. His style is based on a pursuit of fruit purity, fluid texture, and respect for the grape, without oenological masking or excessive extraction. The estate works renowned terroirs of Morgon, notably around Côte du Py and Corcelette, where decomposed granitic and schist soils give the wines a very recognizable mineral energy. The Morgon Classic represents the entry into the estate's universe, but it retains all the precision, gourmandise, and elegance that have made Jean Foillard's reputation. The 2024 vintage fits this direct, lively, and digestible style, with a red designed to offer the brightness of Gamay without sacrificing the depth of the cru. Domaine Jean Foillard Morgon Classic 2024 thus expresses a highly drinkable, sincere, refined, and deeply terroir-attached Beaujolais.
The Morgon Classic 2024 cuvée is made from 100% Gamay, the emblematic grape variety of Beaujolais, here vinified in a spirit of finesse and transparency. The grapes are hand-harvested, then worked as whole clusters, with carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration at low temperature according to the estate's associated practices. Fermentations take place with indigenous yeasts, without seeking strong extraction, in order to preserve the freshness, fruit, and delicate touch of the wine. This approach gives a Morgon less marked by power than by the balance between juice, spices, suppleness, and tension. The 2024 vintage, still young, highlights a crunchy, floral, and luminous profile, perfectly suited for tasting in the first few years. The character of the cru, however, brings more depth than a simple fruit-driven Beaujolais, with a fine structure and a more persistent finish. Morgon Classic 2024 thus stands out for its ability to combine immediate pleasure, natural expression, and true terroir identity.
On the palate, Domaine Jean Foillard Morgon Classic 2024 shows a bright ruby red color, luminous and full of brilliance. The nose may evoke fresh cherry, raspberry, peony, violet, crushed strawberry, sweet pepper, and a fine mineral touch. On the palate, the wine is juicy, supple, and vibrant, with a fluid texture and very fine tannins. The whole favors freshness, pure fruit, and sapidity, while retaining the discreet depth typical of great Morgon. The finish remains light in appearance but persistent, carried by red fruits, flowers, and a spicy nuance that calls for food. This red will ideally accompany roasted poultry, Lyonnais sausage, veal chop, pâté en croûte, bistro cuisine, sautéed mushrooms, or a soft cheese. It can be enjoyed young, slightly chilled, after a short aeration, while gaining complexity over a few years in the cellar.
