Domaine Elian Da Ros - Coucou Blanc 2023
Domaine Elian Da Ros is one of the major references of the Côtes du Marmandais, a South-West appellation long discreet but capable of producing very unique wines. Located in Cocumont, Elian Da Ros has deeply marked his territory with an artisanal, demanding approach attentive to natural balances. After experience in Alsace, he developed a personal vision of wine, where aromatic precision and freshness count as much as depth of matter. The estate works mainly with manual harvests, rigorous grape sorting, and natural fermentations with indigenous yeasts. Coucou Blanc holds a special place in the range, as it is an atypical white for Marmandais, inspired by a more northern sensitivity while remaining rooted in the South-West. The 2023 vintage continues this identity with a dry, ample, floral, and energetic white wine. Domaine Elian Da Ros Coucou Blanc 2023 thus expresses an original balance between fruit ripeness, tangy freshness, and refined texture.
The Coucou Blanc 2023 cuvée is made from 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Sauvignon Gris, and 30% Sémillon, a blend that combines aromatic brilliance, volume, and depth. Sauvignon Blanc brings liveliness, citrus, and tension, while Sauvignon Gris enhances aromatic complexity with a fleshier and slightly spicy nuance. Sémillon completes the ensemble with its roundness, texture, and ability to give breadth to the wine. The vines rest on a clay-gravel terroir with a blue marl subsoil, a combination that contributes to the wine's freshness, density, and persistence. After slow pressing and cold settling, fermentation and aging take place in large oak vats and concrete eggs for 19 months. This aging period gives the wine a broad texture and beautiful stability without reducing it to a simple aromatic white. Coucou Blanc 2023 thus presents itself as a gastronomic white, original, structured, and capable of evolving favorably over a few years.
On tasting, Domaine Elian Da Ros Coucou Blanc 2023 offers a clear robe with golden reflections, bright and luminous. The nose may evoke white flowers, ripe lemon, pear, quince, peach, mirabelle plum, and a touch of exotic fruits. On the palate, the attack is tangy, then the wine gains breadth with a round, flavorful, and well-balanced matter. The freshness of Sauvignon maintains the drive, while Sémillon brings a more enveloping sensation and a deeper finish. Aging in large oak vats and concrete eggs gives a polished texture, without excessive woodiness, and preserves beautiful aromatic precision. This Côtes du Marmandais white will ideally accompany shellfish, fish in sauce, creamy poultry, saffron dishes, exotic or slightly spicy cuisine. It can be drunk young for its floral and fruity brightness but can also gain complexity after a few years of aging.
