Domaine d'Eugénie - Chambertin Grand Cru 2023
Located in Vosne-Romanée, Domaine d'Eugénie was established in 2006 following the acquisition of Domaine René Engel by the Pinault family, who also own Château Latour in Pauillac. The estate has gradually developed around an exceptional heritage of plots located in the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Chambertin Grand Cru, at the heart of the Gevrey-Chambertin vineyard, is among the most legendary terroirs of Burgundy, celebrated for centuries for the depth and longevity of its Pinot Noir. Situated on the hillside overlooking the village, immediately north of Clos de Bèze, this climate benefits from an eastern exposure particularly favorable to the gradual and regular ripening of the grapes. Its brown limestone soils, mixing clay, scree, and stony fragments, rest on a limestone substrate that contributes to the structure and freshness of the wines. The reputation of Chambertin rests on this exceptional ability to combine concentration, power, and refinement, with a complexity that fully reveals itself after many years of aging. In Domaine d'Eugénie's interpretation, this Grand Cru primarily seeks fruit precision, tannin finesse, and the purest possible expression of its terroir.
The 2023 Chambertin Grand Cru is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, respecting Domaine d'Eugénie's viticultural philosophy based on soil work and measured intervention both in the vineyard and the cellar. The grapes are hand-harvested, with particular attention to their maturity and sanitary condition. The vinification favors a gradual and delicate extraction, intended to preserve the balance between Chambertin's natural concentration and the elegance of Pinot Noir. The proportion of whole clusters can be adjusted according to the maturity of the stems and the characteristics of the vintage, to promote aromatic complexity without hardening the tannic structure. Fermentations are conducted with precision, seeking fruit purity and terroir transparency. Aging in French oak barrels then refines the tannins and supports the aromatic development of the wine, without seeking a dominant woody expression. The 2023 vintage, characterized in Burgundy by beautiful maturity and a generous fruit expression, should offer a particularly harmonious Chambertin, combining depth, freshness, and aging potential.
The 2023 Chambertin Grand Cru should reveal an intense and complex bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant, accompanied by delicate floral nuances of violet and rose. Upon aeration, notes of licorice, fine pepper, and sweet spices may gradually enrich this aromatic expression, revealing the full depth of the terroir. The palate promises to be ample and structured, with dense, concentrated yet remarkably balanced matter, supported by fine tannins and precise acidity. Chambertin's characteristic power should express itself without heaviness, thanks to an elegant texture and freshness that accompanies the wine through to the finish. The finish promises remarkable persistence, extended by nuances of black fruits, wet stone, and fine spices. Still in its youth, this Grand Cru has exceptional aging potential and should develop over decades aromas of undergrowth, truffle, fine leather, and dried flowers. It will ideally accompany royal hare, Rossini beef fillet, roasted pigeon with morels, rack of lamb, or a piece of feathered game.
