Domaine Combier - Clos des Grives White 2023
A major reference of Crozes Hermitage, Domaine Combier has been producing precise, bright wines with great drinkability for several generations. The family cultivates its vines with respectful agriculture, paying particular attention to the soils, yields, and ripeness. In this northern Rhône Valley area, the bright climate is tempered by winds, which helps preserve freshness and balance. In the cellar, the vinifications are minimally interventionist, driven by indigenous yeasts and a measured use of wood. The goal is to let the terroir speak more than the technique, favoring fruit purity and texture finesse. Clos des Grives is the emblematic cuvée, in its two expressions: red and white.
Clos des Grives White 2023 comes from a unique parcel planted with Roussanne on soils of rolled pebbles and clay, at the heart of the estate's historic terroir. The vines, old and deeply rooted, naturally produce low yields, a guarantee of aromatic concentration. The 2023 vintage, sunny but without excess, allowed for perfect ripeness while maintaining a structuring acidic framework. The harvest is done manually, then the grapes are gently pressed before fermentation in barrels and demi-muids. Aging on fine lees continues for several months, with measured bâtonnage to add volume without weighing down the wine. The result is a haute couture Crozes Hermitage white, ample, complex, and crafted for gastronomy.
On the nose, the wine reveals notes of white flower, vine peach, fresh apricot, and light honey, enhanced by a touch of linden and almond. On the palate, the attack is ample and silky, with a generous texture that coats the palate without heaviness. The mid-palate blends ripe yellow fruits, candied citrus, fine lemon cream, and soft spices, supported by subtle freshness that keeps the wine balanced. The finish is long and persistent, marked by discreet minerality, notes of flower honey and toasted hazelnut, with noble bitters that structure the whole. At the table, Clos des Grives White 2023 pairs magnificently with free-range poultry with morels, a noble fish in sauce, seared scallops, or a mushroom and truffle risotto. It also proves splendid with pressed cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort.
