Domaine Combier - Cuvée L - Crozes Hermitage Magnum 2024
In the heart of the northern Rhône valley, Domaine Combier stands out as an essential reference for Crozes Hermitage, with a syrah that is always pure, juicy, and highly drinkable. A family estate for several generations, it relies on meticulous viticulture, close to organic practices, where soil work and yield control play a central role. The plots benefit from a bright Rhône climate, tempered by winds, which allows for full ripeness without heaviness. In the cellar, vinifications remain minimally interventionist, with gentle extractions and measured use of wood. The goal is clear: to preserve the gourmand and spicy character of the syrah while maintaining freshness and balance. Cuvée L is the most accessible and immediate version, designed as an entry point into the Combier style.
Cuvée L Crozes Hermitage Magnum 2024 comes from syrah vines planted on soils mixing rolled pebbles, clay, and silt, which provide both structure and freshness. The 2024 vintage, sunny yet consistent, offers beautiful grape maturity while retaining a lively acidic framework. The harvest is done by hand, then the berries are vinified with measured extraction to favor fruit and tannin finesse. Aging takes place mainly in tanks and already seasoned barrels, without seeking marked oak influence, to keep a clear and readable profile. Offered in magnum, the cuvée benefits from a slower, more harmonious evolution, ideal for aging as well as large gatherings. This generous format particularly highlights the convivial, gourmand, and digestible character of this Crozes Hermitage.
On the nose, aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and raspberry open up, complemented by violet, black pepper, and a slight licorice touch. On the palate, the attack is juicy and immediate, driven by crunchy fruit and a supple texture that make the wine very accessible from its youth. The tannins are fine, perfectly integrated, highlighting a mid-palate combining black fruits, soft spices, and a hint of black olive in the background. The finish, fresh and slightly spicy, leaves an impression of black berries, dried herbs, and great drinkability, enhanced by the vintage's balance. At the table, this 2024 Cuvée L magnum pairs equally well with grilled rib of beef, herb-roasted lamb, free-range poultry, or generous bistro cuisine. It also pairs wonderfully with vegetarian dishes featuring roasted vegetables, root vegetable gratins, or sautéed mushrooms.
