Domaine Sébastien Magnien - Meursault 2023
Located in Meloisey, on the heights of the Côte de Beaune, Sébastien Magnien belongs to a family of winemakers deeply attached to the Burgundian terroirs. Since taking over the family estate in 2004, he has developed a careful approach to the identity of each plot, both in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and on the slopes of Pommard, Volnay, and Meursault. This last appellation holds a special place in the landscape of great white Burgundies, with Chardonnays renowned for their breadth, depth, and remarkable aging potential. The clay-limestone soils of Meursault, whose composition and thickness vary considerably depending on the area, promote a great diversity of expressions, between richness of texture and mineral tension. The estate favors a viticulture respectful of the soils, combining plowing and manual interventions, to preserve the natural balance of the vine. This philosophy continues in the cellar with low-intervention vinifications and measured aging, intended to accompany the wine without masking its origin.
The Meursault 2023 is made exclusively from Chardonnay, a grape variety that finds one of its preferred territories on the slopes of the Côte de Beaune. The 2023 vintage benefited from generally favorable climatic conditions in Burgundy, with a dynamic growing season and a particularly warm September that accelerated ripening. In this context, the choice of harvest date proved decisive to preserve freshness and avoid excessive concentration of the grapes. Sébastien Magnien precisely seeks this balance between aromatic maturity and liveliness, essential to defining a great Meursault. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected before arriving at the cellar, where vinifications favor a delicate extraction of the juices. The aging in wood then supports the development of the texture and aromatic complexity of the Chardonnay, while preserving the character of the fruit. The 2023 thus fits into an interpretation of Meursault that combines the generosity of the vintage with the precision sought by the estate.
This Meursault 2023 should present a pale yellow robe with golden reflections and an expressive bouquet of ripe pear, white peach, and citrus, gradually enriched with floral nuances and dried fruits. Aeration could reveal notes of fresh hazelnut, delicate butter, and fine spices, characteristic of the evolution of great Chardonnays from the Côte de Beaune. On the palate, the attack is distinguished by a broad and enveloping body, quickly balanced by acidity that brings relief and precision. The natural richness of the vintage should translate into a generous texture, without compromising the freshness essential to the overall balance. The finish lingers on notes of ripe citrus and a discreet saline sensation, hinting at interesting aging potential. This wine will naturally find its place alongside seared scallops, roasted turbot, creamy poultry, or mushroom risotto, whose textures will accompany its depth. Served around 12 °C, it can be enjoyed young for its fruit and generosity, or kept for a few years to develop more complex nuances of hazelnut, honey, and dried fruits.
