Domaine Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey - Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023
The Domaine Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is located in Chassagne-Montrachet, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, a region renowned for the finesse and complexity of its great white wines. Founded in 2005 by Pierre-Yves Colin after leaving the family estate Marc Colin, the domaine quickly established itself as one of the major references of the new generation of Burgundy winemakers. The vineyard now covers just over ten hectares spread across several prestigious appellations of the Côte de Beaune, notably Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, and some grand crus. The domaine's philosophy is based on attentive viticulture to the soils and grape maturity, combined with very precise vinifications aimed at preserving the identity of each terroir. The wines are generally pressed as whole clusters and then aged for a long time on the lees to obtain a deep texture and great aromatic precision. In this pursuit of excellence, the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is one of the domaine's most prestigious cuvées. This grand cru comes from the famous Corton hill, located between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny, and Pernand-Vergelesses, where the Chardonnay vines rest on clay-limestone soils conducive to the production of great age-worthy white wines.
The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes coming from plots located on the limestone slopes of the Corton hill. This grand cru terroir, exposed at altitude and benefiting from a slightly cooler climate than the plots situated lower down, favors slow ripening that preserves the freshness and precision of the fruit. The grapes are carefully harvested to maintain their natural balance between richness and acidity. After a delicate pressing of whole clusters, fermentation is carried out in oak barrels, a method that supports the wine's structure without masking the expression of the terroir. The aging continues for many months on fine lees, often in demi-muids or previously used barrels, to develop the wine's texture and complexity. This slow maturation helps to enhance the tension and aromatic depth characteristic of the great crus of the Côte de Beaune. The result is a powerful and precise Chardonnay that reflects the uniqueness of the Corton-Charlemagne terroir.
On tasting, the 2023 Corton-Charlemagne reveals a complex nose dominated by aromas of white-fleshed fruits, delicate flowers, and citrus, with additional nuances of honey, hazelnut, and warm stone. The palate is distinguished by a broad and concentrated texture, supported by lively acidity that brings tension and balance. The flavors evoke white peach, ripe pear, and candied lemon, accompanied by a persistent mineral dimension linked to the limestone soils of the terroir. The whole presents great depth and structure that promises a beautiful evolution in the bottle. The finish, long and saline, extends the aromas with a remarkable freshness sensation. This Burgundy grand cru ideally accompanies noble shellfish, roasted lobster, fish in sauce, or Bresse poultry with cream. Thanks to its richness and natural tension, it has significant aging potential that will allow it to develop even more complex aromas over the years.
