Domaine Louis Boillot - Ghislaine Barthod - Gevrey Chambertin 2022
The Domaine Louis Boillot & Fils is now one of the most exciting names on the Côte de Nuits, with an identity deeply rooted in Burgundy's winemaking history. Descended from the famous Boillot family of Volnay, Louis Boillot founded his own estate in 2003 after many years working at Domaine Lucien Boillot in Gevrey-Chambertin. For over twenty years, the wines have been made in Chambolle-Musigny in the cellars of Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, a key figure of the appellation and wife of Louis Boillot. This family and technical proximity has shaped a shared style based on precision, fruit purity, and a very fine reading of Burgundy terroirs. Today, their son Clément Boillot is gradually ensuring the continuity of the two family estates, continuing the same demanding work in the vineyard and cellar. The teams and infrastructures are closely linked while maintaining two distinct estates and two well-identified signatures.
This cuvée comes from several old vine parcels located on different climats of Gevrey-Chambertin, some of which are over fifty years old. The 2022 vintage has produced particularly balanced wines in Burgundy, with ripe maturity while retaining freshness and beautiful tension. The vinification remains faithful to the house style with gentle extraction, minimal intervention, and measured use of new oak to preserve the identity of the Pinot Noir and the mineral signature of the terroir. The aging takes place slowly over about fifteen to eighteen months in barrels, without excessive pursuit of power or aromatic masking. The estate favors digestible, precise wines built to evolve elegantly over the years. In this Gevrey-Chambertin, the typical structure of the appellation meets a more airy and refined approach inherited from the Chambolle-Musigny school. The result offers a Burgundy red that is both serious, vibrant, and particularly true to its origin. This 2022 already has good accessibility but will gain complexity after a few years of aging.
The tasting reveals an intense and nuanced nose blending Morello cherry, fresh raspberry, red plum, violet, sweet spices, and fine smoky notes. On the palate, the wine presents a slender and energetic texture supported by fine tannins and remarkable freshness for the vintage. The material remains precise and straight, without heaviness, with a true sense of terroir that extends the finish on mineral and slightly peppery notes. The whole perfectly expresses the balance sought by the Boillot-Barthod family: depth without excessive extraction, concentration without showiness. This Gevrey-Chambertin will ideally accompany a matured côte de bœuf, roasted pigeon, duck fillet, or traditional Burgundian cuisine. A few years in the cellar will allow the wine to develop more complex aromas of undergrowth, truffle, and fine spices. It can easily evolve for about ten years or more under the best storage conditions. It is a bottle of character that seduces as much by its sincerity as by its very Burgundian elegance.
