Domaine Combier - Saint-Joseph 2024
On the right bank of the Rhône, the slopes of Saint-Joseph create a spectacular landscape where vineyard terraces cling to the granite slopes overlooking the river. This historic appellation, stretching from Condrieu to the vicinity of Cornas, offers Syrah particularly favorable conditions for producing elegant, structured wines deeply marked by their terroir. Historically established in Pont-de-l'Isère, Domaine Combier has become one of the reference estates in the northern Rhône valley, notably thanks to its early commitment to organic farming. As early as 1969, Maurice Combier abandoned synthetic chemical products, a practice continued by his son Laurent, then by the new generation represented by Julien and David. While the estate is particularly renowned for its Crozes-Hermitage, its Saint-Joseph allows discovering another expression of Syrah, shaped by the granite soils of the western bank of the Rhône. On these slopes, the grape variety generally develops a slender structure, a beautiful aromatic intensity, and freshness that contributes to its aging potential. This cuvée thus illustrates the Combier family's desire to reveal the diversity of the great northern terroirs through precise and balanced wines.
The Saint-Joseph 2024 is made exclusively from Syrah, the emblematic grape variety of the great red wines of the northern Rhône valley. The vineyards of the appellation mainly rest on granite formations, whose decomposition gives rise to relatively poor and well-drained soils, favoring deep rooting of the vine. The 2024 vintage, marked by contrasting climatic conditions and significant rainfall, required particular attention in the vineyard to preserve the sanitary condition of the grapes and achieve satisfactory ripeness. True to its philosophy, Domaine Combier favors a careful approach to viticulture and vinification aimed at preserving the fruit's personality. Extractions are conducted with restraint to develop a harmonious tannic structure without seeking excessive concentration. The aging then accompanies the wine's maturation, allowing Syrah to gain complexity while retaining the freshness and aromatic precision characteristic of the Saint-Joseph terroirs. This approach gives rise to a balanced expression of the appellation, in which the depth of the fruit combines with an elegant structure and a beautiful persistence.
The Saint-Joseph 2024 should present a refined aromatic expression, combining fresh blackberry, blackcurrant, and black cherry with nuances of violet, black pepper, and delicate spices. Upon aeration, notes of licorice, black olive, and a slight smoky dimension may gradually enrich this bouquet, revealing Syrah's personality on granite terroirs. On the palate, the attack promises beautiful intensity, supported by a supple texture and fine tannins that provide structure without compromising the overall elegance. The freshness of the vintage should favor a precise profile, in which liveliness harmoniously accompanies the fruit's ripeness. The finish is expected to be persistent, with peppery nuances and a discreet mineral sensation that pleasantly prolong the tasting. Accessible after a few years in the cellar, this wine can also evolve favorably by developing notes of leather, undergrowth, and sweet spices. It will pair particularly well with roasted herb rack of lamb, pigeon with porcini mushrooms, grilled ribeye steak, or venison fillet, preparations that will highlight its depth and tannic finesse.
