Haitza 2014 from Domaine Arretxea is a great Basque red wine from the steep slopes of Irouléguy, in the heart of the inland Basque Country, where the vines take root in red sandstone and schist soils carried by the foothills of the Pyrenees. The Riouspeyrous family has been managing the estate biodynamically for many years, with manual viticulture, controlled yields, and a constant desire to translate the landscape into the glass rather than to impose a demonstrative style. The estate's flagship cuvée, Haitza – which evokes rock in Basque – highlights the depth of tannat combined with cabernet franc, in an interpretation that is both earthy, energetic, and highly precise. The 2014 vintage, fresher and more classic than recent sunny years, allowed for slow and complete ripening, preserving a beautiful natural acidity, perfectly ripe tannins, and a very clear aromatic expression. The long and controlled aging work refines the structure without marking the wine with overpowering oak, thus enhancing the terroir's readability. On the nose, Haitza 2014 reveals a deep and nuanced aroma, blending ripe black fruits, wild blackberry, blackcurrant, and Morello cherry, with notes of dark spices, pepper, blond tobacco, and light cocoa. Hints of undergrowth, fresh earth, and warm stone appear upon aeration, recalling the mountainous and mineral character of Irouléguy. On the palate, the attack is ample and straight, with dense matter supported by tight but perfectly coated tannins that structure the wine without hardening it. The mid-palate unfolds a beautiful depth of black and red fruits, complemented by nuances of aromatic herbs, licorice, and smokiness, in a serious yet always balanced register. The freshness of the vintage brings a salivating tension that lengthens the body and avoids any heaviness, offering a digestible profile despite the natural power of the grape varieties. The finish, long and persistent, stretches over spicy, balsamic, and mineral notes, confirming the 2014's suitability for aging. At the table, Haitza 2014 will find natural pairings with characterful cuisine, such as roasted milk-fed lamb, pigeon or duck with mild spices, a matured rib steak, or a slowly braised beef cheek stew. It will also pair very well with Basque charcuterie plates, homemade terrines, or aged sheep's cheeses, where its structure and aromatic relief will echo the richness of the dishes. This terroir red is designed to evolve serenely in the cellar, gaining complexity over the years, with notes of truffle, fine leather, and undergrowth, while retaining a fresh backbone and a well-marked mineral framework. Clos des Millésimes Bordeaux offers Haitza 2014 as part of a sharp selection dedicated to committed estates and rare characterful wines, with particular attention paid to authentic expressions of the great terroirs of the Southwest. This cuvée is aimed at enthusiasts seeking a deep, identity-rich red perfectly suited to gastronomy, capable of shining today after good aeration as well as revealing itself over prolonged aging.

Domaine Arretxea - Haitza 2014

Haitza 2014 from Domaine Arretxea embodies the deepest, most earthy, and noblest dimension of Irouléguy reds, in a vintage that successfully combines maturity, freshness, and great precision. The dark ruby robe, slightly evolved towards garnet, signals a complex and well-aged wine. The nose opens with aromas of ripe black fruits, wild blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, enriched with notes of fine leather, blond tobacco, and sweet spices. In the background, hints of sweet pepper, licorice, black pepper, and a smoky touch reminiscent of the terroir blending red sandstone and schist emerge. The palate, ample and structured, reveals a dense yet elegantly melted texture, where the tannins, once firm, are now perfectly softened. The finish, long and flavorful, offers admirable relief, with a return of black fruits, Basque garrigue, and warm stone.

With aeration, Haitza 2014 gains even more complexity, unveiling nuances of pure cocoa, undergrowth, dark chocolate, stewed fruits, and dried herbs. The wine breathes the maturity of a long and controlled aging, as well as a vinification designed for depth rather than showmanship. The texture, velvety and coherent, maintains a remarkable freshness that reflects the mountainous climate of Irouléguy. The mineral framework of the terroir appears in the wine’s verticality and structure, while the patina of time rounds the edges and enriches the aromatic profile. Each glass expresses a perfected balance between contained power, elegance, and inner energy. This is a red that fully reveals the aging potential of this iconic cuvée, capable of crossing the years with nobility.

At the table, Haitza 2014 is a wine of great gastronomy, ideal for powerful and refined dishes. It pairs magnificently with roasted Aldudes lamb, a slowly braised leg of lamb, matured beef, farm-raised guinea fowl with mushrooms, or a delicate game dish. Its spicy and slightly smoky profile also makes it a natural companion for characterful cheeses, notably the aged sheep’s milk cheeses from the Basque Country. Served around 16 to 17 °C and, if necessary, after a short aeration, it unfolds all its complexity and depth. Already splendid today, it can still evolve for a few years, developing notes of noble leather, dried herbs, candied black fruits, and subtle spices. This is a great author’s red, classy, vibrant, and deeply rooted in its terroir, which brilliantly testifies to the rigor and vision of Domaine Arretxea.
