Domaine Combier - Cap Nord Crozes-Hermitage 2024
In the heart of the northern Rhône valley, Domaine Combier has established itself as one of the emblematic estates of Crozes-Hermitage, thanks to an approach that combines respect for the terroir, precision in winemaking, and environmental commitment. Since 1969, Maurice Combier chose organic farming, a pioneering approach in the region at the time, which his son Laurent developed before being joined by Julien and David, representatives of the new family generation. Although the estate is historically located in Pont-de-l'Isère, in the southern part of the appellation, the Cap Nord cuvée explores a noticeably different expression of Syrah. It comes from the northern slopes of Crozes-Hermitage, where the more pronounced relief and granitic soils contrast with the pebble terraces of the south. This geological diversity is one of the great riches of the appellation, allowing the same grape variety to develop very different personalities depending on its origin. On these northern terroirs, Syrah generally expresses more tension, a more vertical structure, and a particularly spicy aromatic palette. Cap Nord embodies this precise and elegant interpretation of Crozes-Hermitage, where the depth of fruit is accompanied by a true mineral freshness.
Cap Nord 2024 is made exclusively from Syrah coming from plots located on the granitic slopes in the northern part of the appellation. Unlike the clay-limestone soils covered with pebbles that characterize Clos des Grives, these granitic formations favor a more tense expression of the grape variety, with a particularly interesting tannic structure. The vines are managed organically, in line with Domaine Combier's historic philosophy, with constant attention paid to soil vitality and the natural balance of the vineyard. Manual harvesting allows for the selection of grapes and preservation of their integrity before vinification. The 2024 vintage, marked by contrasting weather and significant rainfall, required particular vigilance to achieve homogeneous ripeness while preserving the natural freshness of the grapes. In the cellar, Laurent Combier favors measured extractions and oak aging designed to support the wine's structure without masking the personality of its terroir. This approach preserves the aromatic precision of Syrah and highlights the granitic character of this cuvée.
Cap Nord 2024 should reveal a particularly refined aromatic expression, combining fresh blackberry, blackcurrant, and black cherry with nuances of violet, black pepper, and delicate spices. Upon aeration, slightly smoky notes, licorice, and rubbed stone may gradually enrich this bouquet, emphasizing the personality of the granitic terroirs in northern Crozes-Hermitage. On the palate, the attack promises beautiful intensity, supported by a concentrated yet slender body, with freshness as the guiding thread. The tannins should present a fine grain and precise structure, bringing depth without compromising overall elegance. The finish is expected to be persistent, with a spicy expression and a mineral sensation that pleasantly extend the tasting. A few years of aging will allow the wine to develop more complex nuances of leather, undergrowth, and spices while maintaining its natural tension. It will pair particularly well with roasted pigeon, herb-crusted rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, or venison fillet, preparations that will highlight its structure and aromatic depth.
