Château FONREAUD 1989
Château Fonréaud is located in Listrac-Médoc , in the Bordeaux region. It belongs to Vignobles Chanfreau . In 1932, Château Fonréaud was classified as Cru Bourgeois Supérieur , a classification renewed in 2003. Since 2008, the wines of Château Fonréaud have been recognized as Crus bourgeois every year. In 1962, Léo Chanfreau, winegrower in Algeria, returned with his family to Metropolitan France. He then visited many properties before buying the Château de Fonréaud. The vineyard now has only 17 hectares of very old vines and the wooden vats of the vat room are doomed to destruction. He replanted the vines, built the concrete vat room which is still used today, and undertook major works in the château. Victim of a tractor accident in 1970, he left his work unfinished. The management of the domain remains family with Marcel then Jean Chanfreau who take over. In 1983, Château Fonréaud was recognized by the profession by becoming a member of the Bordeaux Wine Academy and of the closed circle of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux. In 1985, work began to finish the château and optimize the vineyard. Thanks to the reconstitution of a white vineyard, 1991 is the vintage of rebirth of the Swan brand of Château Fonréaud, created by the Leblanc de Mauvezin a century earlier. The vineyard is managed in sustainable viticulture with a High Environmental Value (HVE) certification.
Château de Fonréaud Rouge is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot . It is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. 1989 was a fantastic vintage for Europe with a number of regions having outstanding vintages, some of the best of the decade. Bordeaux, in particular, had virtually no faults.
