Grosset - Springvale Riesling 2018
Grosset is located in Auburn in the Clare Valley, South Australia. Grosset Wines was established in 1981 when founder Jeffrey Grosset purchased an old milk depot in the historic township. He has always been an innovator and is not affraid about challenging tradition and questioning accepted practices: in the 1990s, when there was a push in the industry to apply the term "Riesling" to cask wine, no matter the variety in the wine, he fought hard to have the name correctly acknowledged. He is also to thank for contributing to the introduction of screwcap closures. In 2000, Jeffrey and a throng of Clare Valley winemakers encouraged Australian and New Zealand winemakers to switch to screwcaps and the public, retailers and media to embrace the change. Beyond winemaking, his current focus is on the assurance of authenticity and elimination of fraud in wine. The five vineyards of Grosset (Polish Hill, Springvale, Gaia, Rockwood and Adelaide Hills) are certified organic, carbon neutral, vegan friendly.
Springvale is a 6-hectares vineyard and part of a much larger property at Watervale in the Clare Valley. This unique viticultural site due to its geology, relative isolation and high altitude, was purchased by Grosset in 1999 and planted in 2000. Planted entirely to three clones of Riesling (one widely planted German, one rare German and one of local origin), the sturdy and resilient vines produce compact yellow-green bunches of moderate sized berries. Hand-harvesting ensures the delivery of the fruit in pristine condition. Each vine produces an average of two-and-a-half bottles of wine.
