Tenuta CastelGiocondo - Brunello di Montalcino 2013
The history of the Frescobaldi family starts over a thousand years ago and is closely connected with the history of Tuscany, in Italy. For 700 years, the Frescobaldi Family has combined tradition, experience and innovation. Frescobaldi represents the true diversity of Tuscany and its six estates, Nipozzano, CastelGiocondo, Pomino, Ammiraglia, Castiglioni and Remole, are all located in the most suitable areas for the production of fine wines. Ornellaia, Masseto, Luce Della Vite, Danzante and Attems (Friuli) are also part of the Frescobaldi Group. The main vision of Frescobaldi is to represent the diversity of its terroirs, while using sustainable cultivation of the land.
Tenuta CastelGiocondo is located to the South-West of Montalcino, at an altitude of 300 meters, an ideal terroir for the production of Sangiovese. The property is one of the first 4 to begin producing Brunello di Montalcino in 1800, and its historic importance is represented on the label of Castelgiocondo by the figure of a candottiere from a celebrated fresco of the Sienese artist Simone Martini. The artist’s depiction shows Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of the troops of Siena who in 1323 led the attack on the Montemassi castle; an historic moment that coincided with the initiation of the Frescobaldi family’s centuries-old adventure in the world of wine.
This Brunello di Montalcino 2013 is entirely made from Sangiovese. The maceration lasts 30 days, and the malolactic fermentation is done immediately after the alcoholic fermentation. The wine is matured in Slavonian oak casks and in French oak barrels. It is aged for a minimum of 2 years in wood and 4 months in bottle. The 2013 growing season saw regular rainfall throughout spring and early summer, which helped the grapevines develop perfectly. The second half of the summer was quite warm, but without the type of heat spikes that could have compromised the grape’s ripening.
