Domaine Robert Denogent - Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru - Les Reisses 2023
In Fuissé, in the heart of the Mâconnais, Domaine Robert-Denogent belongs to that family of Burgundian winemakers whose wines have restored a true depth of expression to the south of Burgundy. The history of the estate dates back to the early 20th century, before Jean-Jacques Robert took over the property in 1989 and his sons, Nicolas then Antoine, continued the adventure with a freer, more artisanal and more earthy sensitivity. Here, Chardonnay is never approached as a simple round grape variety, but as a revealer of soils, maturity, and texture. The house works its vines in certified organic farming, with a biodynamic approach in the process of certification, in a logic of respecting the natural balances of the vineyard. Les Reisses is one of the most sensitive climats of the estate, a premier cru of Fuissé that produces a wine of substance, depth, and great structure. In the 2023 vintage, this cuvée takes on a particularly ample dimension, carried by a generous maturity that the clay soil helps maintain in a fresh line. It is a Pouilly-Fuissé for the table, patience, and relief, built more on mineral density than on immediate brightness.
This cuvée comes from the Les Reisses climat, recognized as Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru starting from the 2020 vintage. The plot covers about half a hectare in the commune of Fuissé, with Chardonnay vines over sixty years old. The terroir rests on a clay soil located between 50 and 80 centimeters deep, giving the wine a broader, fleshier base, but always supported by an underlying freshness. The harvest is manual, then the vinification is done naturally, without oenological inputs, in a very low-intervention spirit. The estate indicates a cuvée vinified and aged without sulfites, then bottled without or with little added sulfites. Aging on fine lees lasts at least twenty-four months in various wooden containers, from Burgundy barrels to demi-muids, including 350-liter barrels and small foudres. This long maturation gives Les Reisses 2023 a deep, polished texture, with a sensation of volume that never turns heavy.
The color presents itself in a luminous gold, already supported by the maturity of the vintage and the length of aging. The nose evokes ripe pear, yellow peach, candied lemon, and baked apple, then opens on notes of almond, white flowers, fresh butter, warm stone, and fine spices. On the palate, the wine has an immediate breadth, almost creamy, but the limestone framework and the natural freshness of Chardonnay quickly tighten the substance. The aging brings depth, a sensation of grain, and a slight patina, without covering the identity of the climat. The finish lingers on ripe citrus, white fruits, a discreet salinity, and noble bitters that give the wine a true gastronomic dimension. This Pouilly-Fuissé will pair remarkably with roasted lobster, scallops in brown butter, turbot with light sauce, farm poultry with cream, pike quenelles, morel risotto, or a long-aged Comté. Served around 11 to 12°C, in a fairly large glass, it will benefit from being opened slightly in advance to allow its substance and depth to unfold.
