Domaine La Florane - Terre Pourpre Visan 2023
The Domaine de La Florane is located in Visan, in the Enclave des Papes in the south of the Rhône Valley, an area known for its high-altitude terroirs and stony clay-limestone soils. The family estate, managed by Adrien and Françoise Fabre, extends over several plots situated between 250 and 400 meters in altitude, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation composed of truffle oaks, olive trees, and scrubland. This elevated location helps preserve a certain freshness despite a Mediterranean climate marked by hot and dry summers. The vineyard is cultivated using organic and biodynamic farming, with a holistic approach aimed at enhancing soil vitality and wine precision. The Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Visan appellation, to which this cuvée belongs, is renowned for its structured reds from red clay-limestone soils and rolled pebbles. The Terre Pourpre cuvée, from the 2023 vintage, represents one of the estate's most ambitious expressions, highlighting the richness and uniqueness of these terroirs.
Terre Pourpre 2023 is made from a typical southern Rhône blend dominated by Grenache, complemented by Mourvèdre, with sometimes a presence of Syrah depending on the vintage balance. The vines are planted on a plot around 400 meters in altitude, characterized by rolled pebbles resting on a purple earth surface and clays at depth, a combination that favors both fruit ripeness and the preservation of a beautiful structure. The grapes are harvested at maturity and then vinified traditionally with measured extraction to preserve the balance between power and finesse. The aging is notable for its duration and precision, with about eighteen months of maturation divided between large wooden vats and amphorae, which helps structure the wine while maintaining the purity of the fruit. This approach gives rise to a wine that is both concentrated and elegant, faithful to the identity of the great wines of Visan.
On tasting, Terre Pourpre 2023 shows a deep garnet color and a nose marked by aromas of black cherry, blackberry, and spices, accompanied by hints of scrubland and ripe fruits. The palate is ample and velvety, with generous body supported by present but well-integrated tannins. The balance rests on the richness of the fruit and a structure that retains a certain freshness thanks to the altitude of the plots. Flavors of black fruits continue with spicy and slightly licorice notes that add complexity. The finish, long and supple, reveals a silky texture and a marked aromatic persistence. This wine pairs particularly well with grilled meats, a leg of lamb, a stew, or Mediterranean herb cuisine. It also has aging potential for several years, during which it will gain depth and complexity.
