Château LA TOUR BLANCHE 2011
In Bommes, at the heart of the Sauternes appellation, Château La Tour Blanche occupies a historic terroir overlooking the Ciron valley. A Premier Cru Classé in 1855, the estate is distinguished by a particularly favorable situation for the development of noble rot, thanks to the alternation of morning mists and drier periods that gradually concentrate the grapes. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the property also presents an institutional uniqueness as it houses a viticulture and oenology school, a legacy of the bequest of Daniel Iffla, known as Osiris, to the French State. The vineyard rests on a mosaic of gravel, clay, and sandier areas that allow the Sémillon to express richness and depth while maintaining necessary freshness. Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle traditionally complete the grape blend, bringing tension, aromatic brightness, and floral nuances respectively. The 2011 vintage is among the great successes of Sauternes, with favorable conditions for regular botrytization and strong berry concentration. After more than a decade of evolution, La Tour Blanche 2011 enters a particularly interesting phase where youthful richness begins to merge into a more complex aromatic palette.
The harvest is carried out manually by successive selections, each pass through the plots allowing only grapes that have reached the desired concentration level under the action of Botrytis cinerea to be selected. Sémillon forms the base of the wine and provides a broad, deep, and smooth texture, with notes of yellow fruits, honey, and candied fruits. Sauvignon Blanc supports this richness with a livelier acidity and citrus notes that give length to the palate. Muscadelle is used in a smaller proportion but contributes to the floral and fragrant dimension of the whole. Vinification and aging in barrels accompany this concentrated matter by gradually bringing nuances of vanilla, spices, and dried fruits. In 2011, the balance rests as much on the liqueur-like richness as on a freshness sufficiently present to preserve precision. This structure allows the wine today to be already expressive while retaining a very important aging potential.
The color shows a deep golden hue beginning to evolve towards amber shades. The nose combines candied apricot, yellow peach, orange peel, and exotic fruits with notes of honey, beeswax, and dried flowers. Upon aeration, saffron, vanilla, sweet spices, and some nuances of dried fruits gradually appear. The palate is broad and enveloping, with generous richness balanced by acidity that maintains energy until the finish. The texture, almost creamy, remains precise thanks to candied citrus and fresher notes brought by the Sauvignon Blanc. The finish lingers long on apricot, honey, spices, and a slight touch of almond. Château La Tour Blanche 2011 will accompany foie gras, lobster with sweet spices, roasted poultry, aged Roquefort, or a lightly sweet dessert centered around apricot and citrus.
