Egon Müller - Scharzhoberger Kabinett 2018
The Scharzhofberger estate of Egon Müller took this name in 1797 in the heart of the German Mosel, about thirty kilometers from Luxembourg. His modern history begins with the great-grandfather of Egon Müller, a certain Egon Müller! All Müllers’ generations have borne the same name and surname. The current descendant is Egon Müller IV who took over the estate in 1991.
However, the vineyard of Scharzhofberger begins well before the arrival of the Müllers. Indeed, it is in the year 700 that we find the first traces of vine cultivation and winemaking. It was at the monastery of Saint-Marien ad Martyres de Trèves where this ecclesiastical vintage was one of the few in the region with no indication of origin.
In the vineyard, Riesling and nothing but Riesling, planted on hillsides. The southern exposure allows a slow ripening of berries, key of success for German Riesling. The total area of the vineyard represents 8 hectares planted on steep slates. We can also consider Scharzhofberger as an area of altitude since the vineyard overlooks Ruwer between 190 and 310 meters above sea level.
The wines of Egon Müller's Scharzhofberger estate are very rare and highly coveted. The particular style of the vintage lies in a perfect balance between sugar and acidity. In general, Egon wines are aromatically very floral and extremely mineral. The behaviour in the mouth is always the same. Frank attack with a slight spritz, little alcoholic power, but very aromatic and an exceptionally long finish.
